Whakatane Activities and Attractions

There are so many Whakatane attractions and activities to enjoy, you’ll need to extend your holiday to see and do them all. With long stretches of pristine beaches and lush, native bushland many of the activities in Whakatane are located either on the sea or in the forest. Whakatane was named the Sunshine Capital of New Zealand in 2010 and continues to rate among the sunniest destinations in the country. If you combine this with excellent fishing, prolific wildlife and a live volcano offshore, you have the makings of a unique holiday in an idyllic beachside setting. Although Whakatane is not a large place, it is crammed full of things to do. The first thing to add to your must do list is a visit out to White Island. White Island is a live volcano which is accessible by boat and helicopter. It is one of the few places in the world you can set foot on an active volcanic island landscape.

On a tour of White Island from Whakatane you will discover sulphuric vents, mud pools and bubbling lakes. A dive trip out around the waters of White island will uncover some of the most unique marine life and rock formations on the planet. Fishing charters from Whakatane depart daily, weather permitting and target such species as Marlin, Skipjack, Snapper and Hapuka. There is also excellent surf casting from the beaches or trout fishing in one of the many rivers and streams around Whakatane, on a guided tour or on your own.

Some of the more popular activities in the region include kayaking, white water rafting, jet boating, mountain biking, hunting. Whakatane tours with experienced guides include cultural tours to traditional Maori meeting houses, dolphin and seal encounters, learn to surf schools and personalised tours designed to suit your requirements. Whakatane accommodation can be found in a range of styles and budgets from backpackers and motels to bed and breakfasts and holiday apartments.

Whakatane is also home to a resident population of kiwi, so don’t be surprised to hear them call at night. The Whakatane area is well known for its walkways and tracks mainly due to the panoramic ocean views and untouched native forests. There are a couple of National parks just a short drive from town which offer everything from short trail walks to 3-4 day treks. After all the activities you can soak your aches away at Awakiri Natural Springs, dine out at one of the award winning cafes and restaurants or visit a local art gallery or museum. The only thing you’ll need to enhance your Whakatane attractions and activities experience is your camera.
