Location Information:
Franz Josef is the base for exploring the nearby Franz Josef Glacier, one of the steepest and most accessible glaciers in the world. There are a variety of options available to explore the glacier. You can walk along the valley to the head of the glacier, but if you wish to walk onto the glacier itself, you will need a guide.
Guided Glacier Walks offer you the opportunity to explore the glacier at close hand. You can also take a scenic helicopter or fixed wing flight over the glacier, with a snow landing at the top of the glacier, or combine the helicopter with a walk on the glacier with a helihike. As well as the glacier is the nearby Kotuku or White Heron Colony at Whataroa, a short drive from Franz Josef.
