Wellington, located at the lower end of the North Island of New Zealand, has some of the most impressive coastlines that allow for an unbelievable array of cruise opportunities. For the day tripper or the overnighter, for singles, couples or families, there are cruises for everyone.
Wellington with its fabulous range of accommodation options is a great place to base yourself and head out on any number of cruises, trips and general exploration.
Wellington is great if you love being outdoors with picturesque hills, a rugged coastline and one of the most beautiful harbours in the world surround it. Adventure activities include mountain biking, sailing, bushwalking and much more. Guided tours such as walking tours, coach tours or even helicopter tours are available to enjoy the sights – so much to do, let the adventure begin!
You will find countless charter boats available for cruising the marvellous waters in and around Wellington Harbour – from large luxurious motor yachts to smaller water taxi-type vessels – you will find something to meet your requirements.
Harbour cruises go from the city across to Days Bay, home to seaside cafes and quality craft shops. Catch the last of the day's sun and watch the shadows fall across the harbour as you fish off the wharf, enjoy a last swim or barbecue dinner on this lovely safe swimming beach. Many excellent day walks, to secret places such as Butterfly Creek, start in Eastbourne. These trails are well worth exploring.
Matiu/Somes Island Reserve makes for a great day trip. Ferries provide a regular service from both central Wellington and Days Bay. The island is also accessible to recreational boats. Kayaks or dinghies can be pulled ashore near the smaller north-western jetty. Make time to visit the lighthouse, count the number of skinks that skitter off the track, and then pause for a moment to reflect on the island’s past, present and future – a great day out for the family.
The Wellesley is a great boutique cruise ship offering weekend one-hour Wellington Harbour cruises, Friday and Saturday night dinner cruises and to make a night of it they offer overnight accommodation!
Fancy cruising Wellington Harbour under sail? Wellington on a good day beats most harbour cities particularly when viewed from the water. Wellington harbour is almost a lake given the narrow entrance and is almost circular measuring some seven nautical miles across. Two islands and the backdrop of native bush clad hills, valleys and distant mountains, offsetting the urban and central business district scene make compelling viewing when under sail.
