Martinborough sits on the site of New Zealand's first sheep station and was established by Irish immigrant John Martin...check out his caricature in the hotel's Settlers Bar. In a gesture of patriotism, he laid the streets out in the shape of a Union Jack flag, and called them after places he had visited on his world travels.

Developer Edmund Buckeridge described it in 1882 as "one of the finest hostelries ever erected in any inland town in New Zealand."
