The pretty town of Wanaka is the perfect choice from which to base your next skiing or snowboadring holiday. Surrounded by 4 popular ski fields and with some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, Wanaka has a peaceful, laid back atmosphere with a quiet country charm. holiday lodgings can be found both in Wanaka and on snow at the ski fields of Cardrona and Snow Park. Treble Cone is a 35 minute drive from Wanaka and is known for uncrowded long sweeping runs and picturesque views of Lake Wanaka and Mt Aspiring. Nearly half of the terrain is dedicated to advanced skiers and snowboarders providing some challenging black runs for the adrenalin hungry powder hound.

Intermediate skiers will also enjoy the rush of the steep terrain. Heli skiing and heli boarding tours operate from Wanaka to take to the best remote locations on the mountain. There are plans underway for a gondola to run from the bottom of the mountain up to the ski fields however nothing has been built at this stage. The drive up to Treble Cone is steep so if you’d rather take the shuttle there are regular trips running from Wanaka. Families and beginners will find the ski fields of Cardrona and Snow Park more to their liking. Both are a 35 minute drive from Wanaka and have dedicated beginner’s slopes and excellent facilities.

Cardrona has spectacular views into South Lake Valley and the runs have something for everyone. It is known as one of the friendliest and fun filled places to ski in New Zealand. There are four quad chairlifts, a good selection of eateries, ski hire, learn to ski packages and child care on the mountain and shuttles run from both Wanaka and Queenstown. The freestyle skiing capital of them all would have to be Snow Park. Just 1,530 metres at its highest peak, Snow Park relies on man-made snow for most of the season. For this reason you are guaranteed to enjoy your skiing from late June right through to early September. The ski areas are accessed by a fixed quad chairlift and a rope tow.

Nearby Snow farm is a Nordic cross country ski area which covers 50km of trails and tracks to follow. Facilities include ski school, eateries and ski hire and you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy all the fun. Wanaka has a range of unique attractions and outdoor activities to keep you busy when you are not skiing. There is also an excellent choice of dining venues with many taking advantage of the superb views across Lake Wanaka.
