Lake Taupo is not only situated in the centre of the North Island it is also considered one of New Zealand’s main centres for outdoor activities and attractions. Blessed with superb views across one of the largest lakes in the Southern hemisphere and home to a great choice of restaurants and bars, Taupo offers excellent shopping and a varied selection of accommodation. The recent addition of a bypass has given the hotels and motels along the expansive waterfront more privacy and peace and quiet than ever before.

Taupo lies within the Taupo Volcanic zone and offers one of the most untouched geothermal areas in the country. Orakei Korako is a 25 minute drive North of Taupo and well worth a visit. Take the ferry across Lake Ohakuri to join the well marked pathways around bubbling mud pools, silica terraces and through native forest and ancient caves. Just a 10 minute drive north of Taupo you will find Craters of the moon, a flat graded track around a large expanse of thermal activity that the whole family will love. Wairakei Terraces also north of Taupo specialises in cultural performances and a working Maori Village set around spectacular silica terraces.

Due to the geothermal activity Taupo also offers two natural mineral thermal hot springs with private pools and swimming pools of varying sizes and temperatures. Both are family friendly and offer slides, playgrounds, cafes and picnic areas an added bonus. Take a guided fishing tour to catch a prize rainbow or brown trout either out on the lake or on one of the many scenic rivers and streams that surround it. Many restaurants in town will cook your fish for you exactly as you like it, or you can have it smoked and vacuum packed to take with you. Other specialised tours will take you kayaking, jet boating, white water rafting or parasailing. Taupo is also within easy reach of Tongariro National Park which includes the ski fields of Whakapapa and Turoa as well as one of New Zealand’s top walks over The Tongariro Crossing.

For an adrenalin rush try bungy jumping, mountain biking, parachuting or quad biking. There are many attractions in and around Taupo with a large amount of them centred around the raging Huka Falls. See the falls from the viewing platforms above or ride up to the base of them by jet boat or scenic boat cruise. Other activities close by include The Honey Hive, Prawn Farm and Taupo Adventure Park. Taupo has a lively arts and crafts scene which includes a working glass blowing factory, studios, museums and a large variety of art galleries nestled between the cosy cafes and boutique shops in town. The list of attractions and activities in Taupo will keep you busy for more than a couple of days so allow yourself time to indulge in as many as you can
