New Zealand’s third and southern-most island is Stewart Island, located in the Southland region and is one of the best places to experience native birds and wildlife, with Rakiura National Park covering a large proportion of the island.
Stretching only 75 kilometres long and up to 45 kilometres wide, Stewart Island is the countries smallest, yet still full of things to do and see. Popular activities on the island include hiking in beautiful Rakiura National Park, or experiencing some of New Zealand's most endangered bird species on Ulva Island, an open sanctuary, with golden beaches, walking tracks, native flora, and stunning picnic spots.
Accessed via ferry from Bluff or charter flights from Invercargill, Stewart Island offers numerous nature experiences, as well as stunning diving and marine activities.
Being the most natural of New Zealand’s three main islands, as it’s the least logged, least farmed, least burnt and least built on. Stewart Island is the perfect spot for anyone seeking peace and tranquility offering stunning bush walks and great launch cruises around some of New Zealand’s picturesque coastline. For something a little offbeat stop in for a drink at the world's southern-most pub, a truly Stewart Island experience!
