Rotorua – a mecca for the trout fisher - offers anglers the very best of New Zealand Trout Fishing with more than ten fishable lakes and countless rivers and streams in the district.

The Central North Island offers the angler unrivaled fly fishing opportunities. There is an amazing variety of water to enjoy, from small clear mountain streams offering sight fishing to relatively large rivers where you will fish blind. Both Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout are present in most waters with Rainbows predominating. All fish are wild and the hard fighting Rainbows in particular, can test the skills of even the best angler. Although a few of the rivers have some short winter closeouts this is truly a year round fishery.

It is your obligation as an angler to know the fishing regulations, especially which fishing methods are prohibited, closed waters and seasons, and catch and size limits. But don’t fret, you can find out what you need to know at the same time you pick up your license. Or you can hire yourself a fishing guide and leave all the technicalities to them and just concentrate on bagging yourself the big one.

If you are looking for adventure mixed in with your fishing then there are some superb remote rivers offering true trophy fishing which can only be accessed by helicopter. A short helicopter ride can take you to areas that often take two or three days to reach on foot. This is an ideal option for those on a tight schedule who wish to experience true wilderness fishing.

Organised by Rotorua East Lions Club, the International Trout Fishing Tournament just celebrated its 40th year in 2007. The three day family trout fishing tournament now has children who are the third generation to fish in the tournament each year as well as regular anglers from overseas who travel to Rotorua each year to participate in the annual tournament. Book your Roturua accommodation early for this time of year as it is extremly busy.

It has been said that Lake Rotorua has the greatest wild trout population per acre of any lake in the world! Perhaps now is the time to go and find out for yourself!
