Queenstown Snow Holidays
A Queenstown snow holiday is about as good as a skiing holiday can get. New Zealand’s South Island has a central mountain range that runs the full length of the island and has hundreds of spectacular snow capped peaks and many of these have been developed into spectacular ski resorts. Queenstown’s latitude of around 45 degrees south ensures that during the winter months there will be plenty of snow falls to provide some of the worlds finest skiing conditions. Queenstown is also really easy to get to with regular flights direct from Australia or domestic flights available from Christchurch. A hire vehicle is always a great option as it gives you the option to choose which of the four major ski resorts to ski at on any given day. There are also shuttle bus services to each of the main resorts if you don’t want to drive yourself.
There is almost no on snow accommodation in this region so Queenstown is the centre of the après ski action and the main place to stay. Queenstown accommodation leaves nothing to be desired with a huge range to choose from. Backpacker hostels, hotels apartments and holiday cabins abound and the standard is spectacular. Most of the accommodation is within walking distance of the town area or overlooking Lake Wakatipu or the spectacular surrounding mountain ranges.
The main snow fields are at Coronet Peak, which is the nearest to Queenstown and connected via a sealed road, The Remarkables which is accessed via the most spectacular alpine road you can imagine, Cardrona which has the most reliable snow and Treble Cone which is soon to be joined to the bottom of the mountain by a gondola which will save the drive up the mountain. These four ski resorts all have ultra modern equipment and facilities. Snow reports, excellent ski hire, tuition, ski patrol, lifts and restaurants are all world standard.
