South Island Campervan & Motorhome Rentals

A campervan or motorhome holidays through New Zealand's South Island will provide a terrific way to see the island and all of its attractions without having to organise accommodation and it will eliminate the need for finding a way to travel around the island. There is a wide range of NZ campervans and motorhomes on offer that will suit the requirements of any potential renter. The south island of New Zealand has a wide network of caravan parks and camping grounds so everyones need can be looked after for travelers using campervans and motorhomes as a means of exploring the island.

There are several major companies that cater for the campervan and motorhome market. We recommend Britz / Maui for its huge range, Apollo Motorhomes and Kea Campers for the quality of their vehicles.. It is essential that you use a well recognized one as you want fast backup if something goes wrong along the way. Most of the major companies have their headquarters in Christchurch which is the largest city on NZ’s south island. There is an international airport in Christchurch with regular flights to and from Australia and the USA and the rental companies depots are conveniently located close to the airport. All the major companies offer a pick up and delivery service from the terminal..

There are many destinations on the south island that must be on your itinerary. The best idea is to try to circumnavigate the island going clockwise from Christchurch. There will be the occasional need for a side trip inland to see major beaty spots like Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook. Travel south along the coast through Timaru and Omaru to the major cities of Dunedin and Invercargill. A day trip to Stewart Island is also rewarding. From here, head across to the Fiordlands and see Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound then come back to Queenstown via Te Anau. Queenstown is the tourism capital of New Zealand and a great place to park your campervan or motorhome for a few days and explore this spectacular region.

During winter it is home to some of the best ski resorts in the world and the lakes around Queenstown and Wanaka are really spectacular. From here drive north through Haast Pass and then on, up the west coast to see the Fox and the Franz Joseph glaciers. A helicopter tour here will be a lifetime memory and worth the expense. You can then continue north along the west coast and return to Christchurch via Arthurs pass or continue on north to Nelson where the inter island ferry operates to transport your campervan or motorhome to NZ’s North island. The trip south again along the east coast will take you to the Kaikouru coast where there are trips to see the Sperm whales and then on to bathe in the naturally warm waters of Hanmer Springs. It is a short drive from here back to Christchurch.

A campervan or motorhome holiday through the South island of New Zealand will be one of the best remembered holidays that you can possible have.
