New Zealand (NZ) North Island, is a great skiing destination. The rugged and mountainous terrain of the north island provides some spectacular locations to experience modern NZ ski resorts with fantastic facilities. Mount Ruapehu is the premier skiing location. It is located in the geothermal belt in the center of the island not far from Lake Taupo and Rotorua. Mount Ruapehu is an active volcano and one of the few places in the world where you can actually ski on one. This region is one of the most geothermally active in the world and associated tourist attractions like pools of boiling mud and towering geysers can be seen in region to add to your experience. Much of New Zealand’s electric power is also generate, on the north island, by tapping into the geothermal heat that abounds in the area.
Mount Ruapehu is home to two major ski resorts. Whakapapa is the most popular with skiers and Turoa is most popular with snowboarders. Both resorts have modern lift facilities and a full range of other necessary facilities like ski hire, first aid and ski patrol. There is an active crater lake at the top of the mountain and eruptions from time to time could make your day more interesting. The last eruption was in September 2007. Latest reports have shown rising temperatures in the lake during 2008. This link provides up to date information on volcanic activity. Accommodation is available in nearby towns and villages and in the major centers of Rotorua and Taupo. During the southern winter, roads in the area can be icy and you must carry and use chains when required by roads authorities.
