New Zealand is the finest place in the world for a snow holiday. There are a large number of excellent ski resorts in New Zealand that are really easy to get to and have world standard facilities. A skiing holiday on either the North Island or the South Island will take you to some of the most spectacular alpine countryside that you can imagine and this can be combined with fabulous accommodation and really sensational restaurants, cafes and all of the other things that are part of a really good vacation.

The North Island is accessed by flying into Auckland in the north. You will need to join an organized skiing tour or hire your own vehicle. This is the best option and a four wheel drive is recommended. During the winter, driving conditions can be really icy and chains may be required. The advantage of skiing on the north island is that you can also visit some of the spectacular scenic attractions that exist here. Rotorua and Taupo are the center of one of the most geothermally active regions in the world and are not far from the ski fields. The ski resorts themselves are all found in the Tongoriro National Park and you will be skiing on Mt Ruapehu which itself is an active volcano. The best places to ski here are Whakapapa and Turoa which both have fantastic facilities.

On the South Island there are more ski resorts to choose from. If you choose to stay in Christchurch the nearest and most popular ski field is Mt Hutt. This is located just over an hours drive to the west and there is also a shuttle service if you don’t want to drive yourself. There are also a number of smaller resorts along the road to Arthurs Pass and at Hanmer Springs. Queenstown is the snow capital of New Zealand. You can fly in direct from Australia or from Christchurch. Many skiers land in Christchurch and hire a vehicle and then drive to Queenstown via magnificent places like Mt Tekapo and Mount Cook. A Queenstown snow holiday will be one to remember. Not only is the region scenically spectacular but the major ski resorts are among the best anywhere. Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona and Treble Cone are all world standard and there are also a number of smaller resorts like Mt Oahu and Snow Park to try as well.

Queenstown accommodation is plentiful and of a high standard and there is lots of après ski fun to build the excitement of your New Zealand skiing and snow holiday.
