This region is extremly popular with the boating fraternity and there is a magnificent protected waterway to explore. Along the north islands west coast are the remnants of the once proud Kauri forests. Every New Zealand traveller should visit the kauri museum and then travel into the forest to see Tane Mahuta which is the second largest tree in the world and around 2000 years old. South of Auckland on the east coast is the Coromandel Peninsular and the Hawkes Bay wine region. Both present fantastic scenery and the rural produce and wines are popular exports. This region is one of the most active geothermal regions in the world and there are spectacular areas to see geysers and lakes of boiling mud. Lake Taupo is also a popular destination for fishermen wanting to catch trout and salmon. Both of these areas have plenty of excellent accommodation. To the south lie's the active volcano of Mt Ruapehu and this in the home of the north islands ski and snowboarding industry. The South Island is just as spectacular as the north if not more so. In the north are the Marlboro sounds which rivals the Bay of Islands for its protected harbours and bays. Hanmer Springs is a place you must visit as you travel down the east coast towards Christchurch. The centre of the south island consists of a continuous snow covered mountain range which gives the country its maori name of Ao Te Aroa or land Of the Long White Cloud. There are numerous ski resorts through out these mountains. Mt Hutt is the biggest in the central section of the island. It is a bit over an hours drive from Christchurch. The Train from Christchurch to Greymouth on the west coast travels through Arthers Pass and is one of the worlds most spectacular train rides.
