What's included when I hire a Maui Rental Car?When you hire a Maui Rental Car, you are supplied with plenty of free extras to help you enjoy your Maui journey. For your convenience, every Rental Car hire includes the following:
- Unlimited kilometres.
- No extra driver fees.
- No one way rental fees.
- FREE airport transfers upon vehicle collection plus return. Queenstown branch is located at the airport (NB. Rental Cars are not available from Wellington).
- FREE Customer Care 24 hour road service helpline.
- FREE 24 hour pick-up and drop-off in Auckland and Christchurch. Times must be pre-booked.
- FREE Travel Wallet including, road maps and travel information.
- Vehicle insurance (excess applies, please refer to insurance section of website).
- Long hire discounts on rental cars or combined rental car/motorhome hires are available. Details on request.
They also have an extensive range of additional hire items including outdoor tables, chairs, and Baby and Booster seats.
How old do I need to be to drive?
Drivers must be 21 years of age or over. For drivers 75 years of age or over, a medical certificate stating that you are fit to drive for the duration of the hire is required.
How is the hire charged?
Hires are charged on a 24 hour basis. Vehicles are required to be collected and returned within business hours unless arranged otherwise. When a rental car hire moves from one rate season into the next, the calculation is based on both rates.
Early return of vehicle does not entitle the hirer to any refund of the unused portion of the rental. Maui allows a grace period of 59 minutes before the hirer is liable for late return charges. Late return fees are applicable as follows:
- 1 hour late, one third of the daily rate will apply
- 2 hours late, two thirds of the daily rate will apply
- 3 hours late, one full day rate will apply
Is there a minimum rental duration?
3 days. Minimum rental period is subject to change during peak periods.
Where are Maui branches located?
Available from Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown (Rental Cars cannot be picked up or dropped off at Wellington branch). An airport concession fee of NZ$12 will apply for all hires that pick up at Queenstown airport. Airport fees are subject to change.
Can I pick up at one branch and drop off at another?
One way rentals are available between all branch locations (except Wellington). No additional one-way fees apply.
Can I pick-up or drop-off at the airport?
Their Queenstown branch is located at the airport! Maui provides free airport to branch and branch to airport transfers on the day of arrival plus departure for the Auckland and Christchurch branches – both are very close to the airport.
What time can I pick-up and drop-off?
Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch:
Daily from 0800 to 1730 hours.
Open all public holidays except Christmas Day (25th December) when all Maui branches are closed.
Queenstown:
0800 to 1730 hours in the summer months. 0800 to 1700 hours in the winter months.

Vehicle collection and/or return outside of branch hours may be available by prior arrangement (refer below). Fees may apply. Please arrange in advance.
Can I pick-up and drop-off outside of branch opening times?
Maui Cars are available for pick up and drop off 24 hours per day from Auckland and Christchurch – times must be pre-booked.
Auckland
Pick-up: Maui offers two options for car collections between 5.30pm and 8.00am.
AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – ISITE DESK - Customers are able to collect their keys, parking docket and parking bay number from the I-Site desk located in the arrivals terminal at the Auckland International Airport, this must be arranged at time of booking. Airport collection incurs an airport concession fee of $20, car parking charges (maximum charge of $24) which is payable on exit of the car park and insurances must be prepaid.
JET PARK AIRPORT HOTEL - 63 Westney Road, Mangere - this hotel is located 5 minutes drive from the airport. Transfers to the Jet Park Hotel are offered by the Maui courtesy shuttle which runs every 30 mins from the International and Domestic Terminal.
Drop-offs: Maui offers two options for car late drop offs.
AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT– ISITE DESK - Customers are able to drop off their Maui rental car at the Auckland International Airport, this must be arranged at time of booking. A charge of $24 for car park fees will apply along with the airport concession fee of $20. Keys, parking docket and the parking bay number can be handed inside an envelope to the I-Site staff located inside the Auckland International arrivals terminal.
HOTEL GRAND CHANCELLOR, Corner of Ascot and Kirkbride Road, Mangere, Auckland – clients can take the Maui Courtesy Transfer Bus from the Hotel Grand Chancellor back to the Airport for their departure.
Christchurch
Pick-ups: COMMODORE HOTEL, 447 Memorial Ave, Christchurch – call the Commodore Courtesy Transfer Bus from the Free Telephone Light box Service in the domestic or International terminal.
Drop-offs: Drop at the Maui branch. Leave the keys in the box.
Do you have any vehicles with automatic transmission?
All their Rental Car options are available with an automatic transmission. Economy car is manual or automatic transmission.
Cancellation fees
If cancelled up to 21 days prior to pick-up ................................... No Fee
If cancelled from 21 to 7 days prior to pick-up ............................. 20% of Rental
If cancelled 6 to 1 days prior to pick-up ....................................... 50% of Rental
If cancelled on day of pick up or No-Show ................................... 100% of Rental
If vehicle is returned early for any reason whatsoever, no refund is available for the unused portion of the hire.
Can a Baby or Booster seat be fitted to any Maui Rental Car?- Baby and Booster seat – Note that not all Maui vehicles can accommodate all types of child restraint equipment.
- Childseats depending on the child’s age are commonly used for children 3 years or less.
- Booster seats again depending on the child’s size are commonly used for children between 3 and 8 years of age.
- Legally all children under (up to) 5 years of age must be restrained in either a car seat whether a child seat or booster.
Can I supply my details before arriving at a Maui Branch?
Definitely! Fill out their online pre-registration form to save time. By providing them with your details in advance their branch staff can process your vehicle faster allowing you to get on the road with a minimum wait time.
Do you have Vehicle Assistance while I am on the road?
Yes, they do. Freecall are supplied at time of vehicle pick up.
