Christchurch has a large range of activities for the whole family to enjoy and there are some great attractions that the kids will love. The best place to start is at the International Antarctic Centre near the airport. You can spend the whole day here exploring the essence of Antarctica. Come face to face with the little blue penguins, experience a blizzard, learn about famous Antarctic expeditions and ride the Hagglund, an all terrain purpose built vehicle that will take you to degrees you’ve never experienced before. There are two wildlife parks to visit in Christchurch. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve has an exclusive guided encounter with the Lemurs tour. Other family attractions in Christchurch include Science Alive with interactive rides, a gyroscope and a climbing wall and The Home of Horsepower where you can take the kids on Sulky ride behind a world champion race horse. Plan a trip out to the French town of Akaroa for kayaking, swimming, fishing, dolphin watching and shopping. Look out for the town crier in costume and meet the locals in this charming settlement. Waipara has a great train ride the family will love in the Weka Pass Railway which runs on the first and third Sunday of the month. Christchurch has a large amount of parks for the kids to get out and stretch their legs in. Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens are right in the centre of the City and you won’t want to miss punting on the Avon River which winds its way through the middle.
Take the family on a fully restored tram ride which loops around all the highlights of the City and includes an informative commentary.
